[Event] Dubkulture

Dubkulture takes place every Wednesday at the Black Sheep in Croydon - the London borough countlessly quoted as the birthplace of Dubstep and home to the esteemed Big Apple Records. Showcasing the best in underground talent, whilst also being host to some of the uprising stars such as J:Kenzo and Tunnidge, DubKulture is the place to go to soak up the genuine, unadulterated Croydon scene. We had a conversation with controller Pistonsbeneath about the night:

What's up, Pistons?
Life is good, blessed in many ways

What can we expect if we roll up to Croydon and come to Dubkulture?

You can expect a family of heads all there for the music and a diverse array of dubstep and occasionally other genres like ukg, funky, jungle and hardcore

So, how'd it all get started?
One wednesday they had no one to DJ so they gave me a shout. I turned up and played some serious tunes and it went off and on the spot they said lets do this weekly

Which big names have gotten involved?
Well the event isn't as such about big names but big djs and producers but a few guys like Tunnidge, Lost, Shiverz, Terrafonix, Killawatt, Benton, Watson and others I forget have all spun at Kulture

We heard someone say it could shift in as the next 'FWD', want to comment on that?

It's got a lot in common certainly and it has got an amazing 20k rig in a relatively small space...people just come down each week to hear some sounds, i wouldn't wanna compare it really though FWD is a sacred event

What's the plan for the future?
Just to keep pushin', there may be other elements to the event soon as well as dj sets such as workshops, next month for my birthday bash to which all are invited confirmed are Darkside, Tunnidge, Terrafonix, Shiverz, Watson, dj 2e and there should be more hugely well known names but don't wanna say until they confirm!

Big ups...
Large up to the whole Dubkulture family (you know who you are!!) but a special shout to Shiverz & Nightmare & Oni as they always smash it so bad, DJ 2e for bring the weight and to

Syte for being technically incredible on the plates!

Catch Dubkulture every Wednesday at the Black Sheep Croydon.

[Free] Blackmass Plastics - Pulsar Pollution EP

Nomination for one of the coolest artist names of all time: Blackmass Plastics. Kanji Kinetic's label - Mutant Bass - has been giving out free EPs for a while now, filled with the tripped out rave music that the crew are known for. Blackmass are veterans of the scene, and have quite a penchant for making unique Dubstep speed tracks that hardly actually resemble the genre, morphing into a scrambled cyberdog trip. To use Mutant Bass' description:

"With an incredible array of releases spanning 11 years on labels such as Rag & Bone, Combat and Yellow Machines, Blackmass Plastics delivers 4 dark and dirty chunks of technoid bassline to destroy any dancefloor."

Enjoy.

Mala's label DEEP MEDi Musik has long been releasing it's back catalogue of plates on digital through their compilations simply entitled 'Releases', satisfying those eager fans who prefer the digital medium. [Label] Abyss Recordings

We've got a keen interest in the international bass music scene, here at the lab. From Deep-Medi's Goth Trad in Japan, to the obvious perps in the States, to - well, just about everywhere, really.

Abyss Recordings is no exception - a new label showcasing the best that New Zealand has to offer. Already securing itself a strong roster with the first 2 releases, label owner Dutty Ranks teams up with Deep-Medi veteran Truth to serve up what one could consider Dubstep's answer to Liquid D&B. Jazzy, soulful and deep, yet still heavy enough to work on the dancefloor, these tracks are bringing something new to the sound, without losing too much of it's core.

With more forthcoming releases from the aforementioned duo, as well as Phoenix and Bulletproof, Abyss Recordings will be featuring the best in New Zealand talent - as well as some top-notch international artists.

Butterz Phase 2

If you're up to scratch on your grime news, you'll notice that Butterz is about to enter what they're calling "Phase 2" of their grime crusade. Phase 2 is where they're departing from their strictly instrumental grime ways; whilst Butterzips have contained quite a couple vocals in them, MC's are now officially being added to the Butterz roster.

Their first release is bound to be huge: not only are they finally releasing the Royal-T remix of TRC - Oo Aa Ee, that fans have been begging about for time now, but they've gotten P-Money, Blacks, and Slickman to spit all over it. It's up for pre-order, to be dispatched on the 16th of May, just in time for summer, and this is what it sounds like:
